Virtual Drops™ combine the practical use of physical backings plus the ability to seamlessly add motion in post with supplied VFX plates that match the backing.
As awe-inspiring as they are, digital volumes are far outside the budget for most productions. Not only is the physical volume expensive to build/operate, but the virtual reality needs to be be constructed from scratch. On the flip side, chroma-screens can appear to be cost effective until you get to post-production. Issues arising from color contamination, backgrounds dropping into reflections and finer details getting lost in the scenery can cause issues in editing. Of course AI is now an option, but backgrounds made with artificial intelligence have the same issues with chroma screens and may also fall into the uncanny valley. This is where our Virtual Drops™ come into action.
Capturing every custom backing as both a high resolution still for print and a matching series of motion plates for post provides the following benefits:
A full environment actors can respond to on set
Elimination of color contamination on set from chroma screens
Preserve finer details with a physical background
VFX motion plates that match the parallax, perspective and scale of the physical backing, allowing easy integration of motion in post
Flexibility to add motion without additionally filming
Maintain realism and avoid the uncanny valley with plates of actual scenery
Starting in 2026, we plan on capturing motion plates with all custom backings at no additional charge until the production decides to use them.
