Night From Day Conversion
Although it is preferable to have a matching night photograph for any Day|Night backing, issues with weather, schedules or location logistics does not always make this feasible. In other cases having the night image does not provide any real benefit either due to registration concerns or the production is seeking a different vision then what the actual night view provides.
Regardless of the reason, we have the ability to create night from day images for use in either our Day|Night or Midnight backings. With 20 years experience photographing architecture professionally, our director of photography and art production, Joe Kitchen, has developed a keen vision for how images of the built environment should look at night. Utilizing our network of experienced retouchors, we can create any night view your production has in mind.
Below are examples from projects where the night image was fully generated from the day image.
Scheduling, Weather & Locations
When working with a production in Pittsburgh, scheduling and weather issues meant we had to photograph both day|night backings in the same day. The locations were about 40 minutes apart and due to location logistics, we could only photograph one at dusk. It was decided that the downtown image would be a full night from day conversion. No special retouching instructions were given by production other then making it look authentically night.
Registration
For a day|night backing showing the front view of a residence in Long Island, the vegetation made it impossible to obtain a perfect registration between day and night. This meant the actual night image could only be used as a reference, and a night from day image was created instead for the print file. Likewise, to help break up the image, light painting and driveway lights were added that were not present at the time of photography.
Stock Photography
Often when capturing stock photography for backings, we are not able to capture the night version for each image we photograph. This was the case in January 2023 when our photographer was in Miami. So nearly 2 years later when a Netflix production needed two day|night backings from our Miami catalog, we produced the night versions from the day images. For this production, our guidance was an overall cool night with little artificial orange glow and a good deal of light pollution in the sky at the horizon.
On another production, we needed to source an image of a Mountain range in Afghanistan for a day|night backing. After finding a day image the production liked, we got to work producing a night from day version for the drop.
Last, for an in-house project, we captured a few day time images of the Wissahickon Park in Philadelphia to create day|night backings with a painterly feel in the night image.
